Things I miss from the 90's | Blog

I was born in 1989 so even though I was born in the 80's I am most definitely a 90's child at heart. There is so much about the 90's that I remember and have great memories of. It felt like such a simpler time. No internet, no hundreds of channels on sky...we had to actually play and use our imagination. The 90's was certainly a very happy time for me and I thought I would share with you the 10 things I miss about the 90's.

1. Epic Barbie Houses.

I had a monster of a Barbie house when I was about 6 and I loved it! It came with everything that a real house would (if your house had a lift!) and it even came with little flannels and towels in the bathroom. I would spend hours setting my house up and then not actually playing with it because I thought that setting it up was more fun!

2. Twist 'n' Squeeze Drinks

My Nan lived in Somerset for a while when I was little and I vividly remember having these when ever I went to see her and they felt like such a special treat! They lived on top of the fridge and I always felt like such a badass with a bottle (albeit a plastic bottle) and would pretend I was at a bar with a beer!! Haha!!

3. Going to the library.

I have always loved reading and going to the library when I was little as such an exciting thing. It wasn't far from where we lived and I would love heading off to the back of the library to the kids section and picking out books. It actually makes me really sad that libraries and books in general seem to be a bit of a dying breed. If you want to read something now yup just download it on your kindle or ibooks. The days of going to the library and searching for a really special book seem to sadly be a thing of the past.

4. The Royal Ballet School Diaries (Books)

As I've just said, I love reading and this series of books really fuelled that love. It was a series of books about a group of girls that had been accepted into the Royal Ballet school and they had me gripped. Luckily there was about 6 books so I was able to keep reading for a long time.

5. Children's TV

Cast your mind back to a time where children's TV didn't have it's own channel. If you try really, really hard you might be able to remember and if you are under the age of 21 the you probably thing I am lying but it's true that there was a time when children's TV was only on for a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening. It was the golden age of children's TV with programmes like Fun House, Zapp, Penny Lane, The Snorks...I could go on and on. This video below has some of my faves in though so just have a watch of that if you want to know what all the fuss is about.

6. POGs

Oh my goodness.. POGS!!! I used to have a whole box full of these bad boys and I have no clue where they all went which is a shame as I think they would be worth a bit now. Pogs were basically little circles of card with different things on them . You could get normal pogs and shiney pogs. You then had to stack them in a pile and throw a 'slammer' (a metal pog) at them at which ever ones were face up you got to keep...if you were playing for keepsies. I loved Pogs and spent an awful lot of the 90's in the school playground playing with them.

7. Chunky, Platform Shoes

I cannot tell you how much I loved my school shoes in the 90's. They looked just like these (just not as high) and I seriously felt like an actual Spice Girl when I wore them. Almost every girl in my school had shoes like this. I loved these so much and remember feeling devastated when I wore the soles away.

8. Hubba Bubba Bubble Gym

This stuff was the king of bubble gum. It came in so many different forms but my favourite was the roll of it that you could get. I was like masking tap and the flavour would disappear after 5 minutes but you didn't care because it was Hubba Bubba and it was cool. :)

9. The Spice Girls

How could I write a post about the 90's and not include the queens of the era. The Spice Girls were my life from 1996 until about 1999 and I had everything Spice! Spice girl leggings, spice girl dolls, spice girl stationary, spice girl posters...you name it...I had it and I loved it! Obvs I always had to be Baby Spice :)

10. The Pencil Cases

This is such a random one but one that really sticks out in my mind. These pencil cases were the BOMB and I remember that you always felt like a boss when you brought one to school. It had all these little pop out sections for things like your rubbers, sharpers etc and it felt so cool and futuristic. No boring round pencil cases over here...it was all about the fancy gadgets! :)

So there you have it! 10 things I miss from the 90's. What would you add to this list? Please let me know as I would love to reminisce some more! :)
